Nonprofit
Incubator (NI), a signature program of the Community
Development Institute (CDI) provides a comprehensive
set of management services to new and existing nonprofits
in the Bay area that promote leadership development,
political empowerment, economic advancement, and social
revitalization in underserved communities. The mission
of NI is to assist and develop strong community-based
organizations to promote quality of life and self-determination
in underserved communities. CDI has provided fiscal
sponsorship services to small- and medium-sized organizations
since 1982. CDI has fiscally sponsored and incubated
over 50 organizations and managed over $5 million
in sponsored programs’ funds.
By utilizing the services
of a fiscal sponsor, sponsored projects do not have
to develop their own administrative expertise and
resources and can thereby concentrate more on program
and financial efficiency.
Services
Fiscal Sponsorship:
the legal infrastructure of a 501(c)(3)
entity, with appropriate legal incorporation, IRS
and Franchise Tax Board exemption, and charitable
registration. Allows sponsored projects to receive
grants and tax-deductible donations from donors.
Financial
Services: oversight of all revenues
and expenditures, monthly financial reports, budget
tracking, payment of all invoices, audit and governmental
reporting, and all tax returns. Funds raised to support
sponsored projects are administered to pay only for
the activities of the project.
Employee Benefits:
standard vacation and sick pay compensation, health,
dental, life, and disability insurance coverage, and
a retirement plan for all full-time employees paid
from project funds.
Administrative
Support: grant proposal review, grant and
contract management, general liability insurance,
assistance with obtaining exempt status, web site
development, email, voicemail, and meeting space.
NI currently provides
fiscal sponsorship services to an always-growing list
of Bay Area organizations including EPA.net, East
Palo Alto Community Choir, For Youth By Youth, headRush,
Leadership Midpeninsula, Living Cultural Storybases,
Nuestra Casa, South of Market Community Action Network,
and others. NI charges fiscal fees that are much lower
than those charged by larger fiscal agents and is
one of the only fiscal agents located in the peninsula
and the South Bay.
On
the Horizon
On the horizon, NI
seeks to develop businesses to promote nonprofit fiscal
sustainability. This new initiative will establish
for-profit businesses whose proceeds would cover part
or all fiscal management and organizational development
costs and fees charged to the organizations that NI
sponsors. As
part of this drive, CDI/NI is a partner organization
in the National Community Development Institute's
(NCDI), W.K. Kellogg Foundation funded grant project
to Transforming Philanthropy in Communities of Color.
As part of this project, NI will find new and innovative
ways to develop organizational sustainability, through
best practice research and expand our organizational
capacity building services, fundraising, and for-profit
business plan development.
